The basic premise of every Leprechaun film is this:

After visiting his birthplace Ireland in 1983, where he kidnapped a leprechaun and stole his pot of riches, Dan O'Grady returns to his home in North Dakota. O'Grady realizes after burying the treasure that the wicked leprechaun had tracked him home and killed his wife. O'Grady subdues the leprechaun's abilities and imprisons him inside a container using a four-leaf clover. He had a stroke before he has the chance to burn him.

Ten years later, J. D. Redding leases the O'Grady farmhouse with daughter Tory. The farmhouse is being repainted by Nathan Murphy, his 10-year-old brother Alex, and their dimwitted buddy Ozzie Jones. While examining the cellar, Ozzie misidentifies the leprechaun as a child. He frees the leprechaun by removing the old clover. Leprechaun tells Ozzie he's an Irish shoemaker who came to America for his money. After failing to convince others he saw a leprechaun, Ozzie spots a rainbow and follows it in search of a pot of gold. Alex follows Ozzie out of worry for him. A bag of 100 gold coins appears before Ozzie. Ozzie examines the riches and swallows a coin, thinking it would cure his brain. They conceal it in an ancient well.

J. D. gets tricked by the leprechaun on the farm into walking into a trap by the leprechaun's disguise as a cat, which causes him pain when he bites his hand. After Tory and the others take the leprechaun to the hospital, the leprechaun leaves on a tricycle. While Alex and Ozzie are checking the gold's purity in a pawn shop, the leprechaun kills the shopkeeper, Joe, for stealing his gold and then escapes after polishing Joe's shoes. A police officer pulls over the leprechaun on his way back to the farm because he is speeding in the go-kart he built for himself. The officer is pursued by the leprechaun into the woods, where the officer is shot and killed. After returning to the farm, the leprechaun begins searching for the pot of gold by polishing the shoes of each he encounters. Following their visit to the hospital, the group returns to the farmhouse. Nathan goes outdoors to check the looting and is injured by a bear trap placed by the leprechauns. In the open air, the mob swarms the leprechaun and beats him senseless with clubs and rocks.

At the nursing home, a leprechaun impersonates O'Grady. As Tory runs, the Leprechaun pursues him to an elevator and dumps O'Grady's corpse down. O'Grady informs her before he dies that the only way to kill a leprechaun is with a four-leaf clover, which grows outside the property. Tory returns to the farmhouse in search of a clover, but is attacked by the leprechaun. Nathan and Ozzie come to her aid. Leprechaun is severely hurt while attempting to get the last gold coin, which Ozzie consumes. Alex binds Tory's four-leaf clover to gum and throws it into the leprechaun's mouth, melting him before he kills Ozzie. Despite falling into a well, the leprechaun's skeleton exclaims, "I want my gold." Nathan fires both with gasoline after pushing the leprechaun down the well. Tory is reconciled with her father, marries Nathan, and has a child when the cops come. As police investigate the well's wreckage, the Leprechaun promises to reclaim all of his money.

At the nursing home, the leprechaun pretends to be O'Grady. The leprechaun follows Tory to an elevator and throws O'Grady's bloody body down the elevator shaft as Tory runs away. Before he dies, O'Grady (blog post) tells her that the only way to kill the leprechaun is with a four-leaf clover, which grows in a big patch right outside the farm. Tory goes back to the farmhouse to look for a clover, but the leprechaun attacks her, and Nathan and Ozzie save her. The leprechaun gets seriously hurt while trying to get the last gold coin, which Ozzie admits he ate. Alex puts a four-leaf clover that Tory found on a wad of gum and fires it into the leprechaun's mouth. This melts the leprechaun before he can kill Ozzie. Even though the leprechaun's skeleton fell into the well, it gets out and says, "I want my gold." After Nathan pushes the leprechaun back into the well, he lights both objects on fire with gasoline. When the police show up, Tory is reunited with her father. She then marries Nathan and they have a child. While the police search the wreckage of the well, the leprechaun says he won't stop until he finds all of his money.

Initially, the leprechaun was intended to return to Ireland. However, there was a problem: the Irish actor portraying the leprechaun, Warwick Davis, lacked a work visa. In order to shoot the last sequence, Davis was required to secure a visa within three days, which is normally impossible. Fortunately, Vice President Dan Quayle's administration was able to expedite the procedure, allowing Davis to complete shooting on time. Quayle earned a "special thanks" credit at the conclusion of the film for his contributions.

Warwick Davis began to regret creating the picture, but because to Anniston's subsequent popularity on television, many people rented it, and it spawned a series of sequels. There are claims that it was one of Warwick's favorites.
